He-Lo Ramirez Awarded Outstanding Project for 2023

He-Lo Ramirez (MS, Interdisciplinary Studies: Wildland Management) was awarded Outstanding Project for 2023. His project entitled “Improving Northwestern Maidu Education in Northern California: A Need for and Creation of Place-Based Culturally Relevant Curricula” is a solid contribution to the work of creating more diverse, relevant, and critical pedagogy for our communities of the North State.

His choice of topic, discussion of the relevant literature, and use of theory are exemplary. In the nomination for this project, it was noted that this Project is one of the first to come from the newly launched Interdisciplinary Studies major in Wildland Management at Chico State. It is fitting and appropriate that the work is done by and for the Native people of this region. While the projects from Wildland Management will vary greatly, the current work is an excellent example and is to be commended.

In their discussion, the committee expressed hope that He-Lo will consider extending this work, perhaps in a Ph.D. program, where he can further the theory and contributions of his scholarship.

Committee: Sara Trechter, Ph.D., Chair and Rachel McBride-Praetorius, M.A.
