First Year Math Placement

Understanding Placement

At the time of admission to Chico State, multiple measures are used to determine readiness for General Education Written Communication and Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning coursework (GE Area A2 and B4). For math, your placement level and declared major determines what course(s) to take within your first year.

First-year math placement levels:

  • GE Math Fulfilled

GE Math Fulfilled: you have been awarded college credit from transferable math coursework, or AP/IB test credit for GE Area B4 Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning

For STEM (math intensive) majors: you may need to complete the three steps of ALEKS PPL to determine readiness for precalculus or calculus

  • GE Math Ready

GE Math Ready: you are ready to enroll in a GE Area B4 Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning course

For STEM (math intensive) majors, you need to complete the three steps of ALEKS PPL to determine readiness for precalculus or calculus

  • GE Math Ready with Support- Early Start Recommended

GE Math Ready with Support- Early Start Recommended: you will be pre-enrolled in a supported GE Area B4 Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning course as determined by your declared major pathway

You are encouraged to complete the three steps of ALEKS PPL to practice with math concepts and potentially boost your math placement. This is highly encouraged for students in STEM (math intensive) majors.

  • Supported Math or Science- Early Start Required

Supported Math or Science- Early Start Required: you will be pre-enrolled in a supported GE B1 Physical Science or B2 Life Science or MATH 198 and UNIV 101 paired course as determined by your declared major pathway

You are encouraged to complete the three steps of ALEKS PPL to practice with math concepts and potentially boost your math placement. This is highly encouraged for students in STEM (math intensive) majors.

You are requiredto enroll in the Early Start Program during the summer prior to your first semester.

Viewing Your Math Status

If you are required to complete developmental math courses within your first year, you can view your mathematics/quantitative reasoning level by logging in to the Student Center within your Wildcat Portal. On the Student Center Dashboard (homepage), go to the "Tasks" section. Click on "Holds" to see if you have a Math/Quantitative Reasoning notice.

  • GE Math Fulfilled

Students in category GE Math Fulfilledwill not see a notice in their Student Center.

    • You can view what Chico State has on file by logging into your Student Center. Under the "Academic Progress" section, click on Transfer Credit Report  to see what course/test credit is being used to satisfy the GE Area B4 requirement.
    • If you are in a major that does not specify a GE math course, or require more math courses, you have met the GE B4 math requirement needed to graduate.
    • Note: For STEM (math-intensive) majors, you may need to complete the three steps of ALEKS PPL(opens in new window) to determine readiness for precalculus or calculus.
    • For example: if you received credit for MATH 105 Statistics from an AP Statistics exam (3 or higher), you have met Area B4 in General Education. However, if you are a Mechanical Engineering (STEM) major, MATH 105 Statistics is not needed for the major and would not determine readiness to for MATH 120 Analytical Geometry & Calculus in the major. Therefore, ALEKS PPL would still be recommended to assess your readiness for precalculus or calculus.
  • GE Math Ready

Students in categoryGE Math Ready will not see a notice in their Student Center.

    • Note: For STEM (math-intensive) majors, you need to complete the three steps of ALEKS PPL(opens in new window) to determine readiness for precalculus or calculus.
  • GE Math Ready with Support- Early Start Recommended

Students in category GE Math Ready with Support- Early Start Recommended will see the message below by clicking on Holds under the "Tasks" section of your Student Center.

    • This is a reminder notice and will not prevent a student from adding courses.
    • The reminder notice will remain until the requirement(s) has been completed.
  • Supported Math or Science- Early Start Required

Students in category Supported Math or Science- Early Start Required will see the message below by clicking on Holds under the "Tasks" section of your Student Center.

    • This is a reminder notice and will not prevent a student from adding courses.
    • The reminder notice will remain until the requirement(s) has been completed.
