In 2013, Chico was awarded a fourth Upward Bound in the form of a STEM program.
Upward Bound STEM is a year-round program for motivated students with academic potential and who are interested in math, science, engineering and information technology. Upward Bound STEM provides the following services to students:
- Weekly academic tutoring
- AI and computer science education
- Evidence based literacy support and instruction
- Test preparation workshops
- Parent workshops
- Six week summer residential program
- Leadership development
- Laptop and equipment loan program
- Assistance with A-G college prep course selection
- Financial aid and college application assistance
- College visitation trips
- Career exploration internships
Participant Eligibility
Participants must be entering grades 11 or 12. Family income must meet the criteria established by the US Government OR neither of the parents have a 4-year college degree. Selection is also based on recommendations from teachers, grades, test scores and a personal interview. You must be attending one of the following high schools:
