Humanities & Fine Arts Entrepreneurship Program

Do you have a great idea for an art business? Do you want to set up a screen printing company, launch a literary e-zine, or open an experimental performance space? 

Apply for the new Humanities & Fine Arts Entrepreneurship pilot program! The top five students will receive up to $1,500 to launch their project. 

The program includes:

  • Specialized courses in HFA and with the Center for Entrepreneurship.
  • Funding (up to $1,500) to help launch your idea.
  • Access to business mentors.
  • Opportunity to practice pitching your ideas and getting feedback from experts.
  • An experiential internship in entrepreneurship based at ChicoStart(opens in new window), a successful local startup incubator.


  • Applicants must propose an original art business, entrepreneurial project, or venture focusing in the areas of humanities and/or fine arts.
  • A budget justifying the requested size of the award (up to $1,500).
  • Students must have a faculty or staff advisor.
  • Students should indicate their availability to take one or more specialized courses in HFA and with the Center for Entrepreneurship in spring 2020.

Required Application Materials

  • Your information: full name, email, student ID, major/area of study, phone number, name of faculty sponsor, email of faculty sponsor.

  • Indicate your availability to take one or more of the following specialized classes in spring 2020:
    • ARTS 498: Special Topics (Arts Leadership) - Tues/Thurs 9:30–10:45 a.m.
    • MGMT 450: Intro to Entrepreneurship
    • BLAW 415: Entrepreneurial Law
    • MGMT 451: Business Plan Development and Financing
    • MGMT 452: Launching and Managing the New Venture
  • 500-750 word narrative including:
    • The nature of the project.
    • How the project relates to the humanities and/or fine arts.
      The role your advisor will play in the project.
    • The possibility that your project may lead to the successful public launch of your idea (i.e. a literary e-zine, an experimental performance space, a screen printing company, a digital photography studio, a product launch, an art business website, etc.). 
    • Proposed itemized budget (up to $1,500).
    • Faculty sponsor letter.


Narrative and Budget Information

Your narrative description should be a minimum of 500 words and no more than 750 words.
Also include a budget for the complete project and specify the costs you will incur. Funds can be used for stipends depending on the nature of the project and the other budget items. Proposals should be clear and written for a general audience.

Faculty Sponsor Letter Information

Faculty sponsors should focus on the importance of the project and its impact on the student. The statement of endorsement must also indicate the role to be played by the advisor. Endorsement should be as informative as possible within the scope of a single typed page. Letters must be submitted directly by the faculty sponsor. It is the applicant's responsibility to remain in contact with their faculty sponsor to ensure submission of the faculty sponsor letter.

  1. Create a single PDF document that includes the following: Your information, spring availability for specialized coursework, project narrative, and proposed budget.
